It was shot from the deck of the Conception, which was the small sailing vessel from the Truth Aquatics fleet that the Sierra Club of Los Angeles went on to sail through the Channel Islands National Marine Life Park. It was an unforgettable 3 day cruise where we anchored offshore and took rubber rafts or kayaks onto shore to explore the islands. We had just begun our trip early in the morning when I looked back to where we had moored for the night and saw this wonderful shot!

Victory! Grand Canyon Uranium Mining Ban!

The Grand Canyon...truly amazing! Ours to keep...for now.

Every year there are several big environmental projects I work on from halting spending on nuclear energy, stopping offshore drilling, developing renewable energy resources to endangered species. Some have to do with just the earth basically which was my big major project over the last 20 years...the oceans and coastal marine life. Also the forests and tree planting have become a second major earth focus all relating to global warming. It is rare that I ever advocate for the deserts or other lands except National Parks and those are usually right in my home state of California.

However the Grand Canyon is one such project that I did devote quite a bit of time in advocating for the halting of uranium mining. Uranium is soooo connected to nuclear energy and ultimately bomb building and radioactive fuel waste that can't be disposed of safely for thousands of years. Today the President made a wise decision and moved in a positive direction for the future of our earth and the generations that will live here after I and even he is gone, pass on. Well, Congratulations President Obama for halting the Grand Canyon Mining of Uranium for 20 years!!

The Grand Canyon is one of the top ten places on the planet that everyone should know about and if possible visit. It is breathtaking and should never be tampered with but preserved. It is one of my most vivid memories, the first time seeing the vast expanse of that gorgeous earthy toned land formation that is more than a canyon. Time rolls off the layers of sediment colors of yellow ochre, pinks and reds, cocoa browns that build up from a vast opening in the earth. Yes it opens up in front of your eyes with amazing colors that are hidden under the earth's surface, like a multi layered cake that has been cut open for us to feast our eyes upon, as far as our eyes can see. There is no other place on earth like it. Thank you Mr. President for appreciating the Grand Canyon. I believe your trip there must have left such an indelible impression on your mind that love went into its formation and that it is a gift for our country to care for and even nurture. God bless America!

Epiphany 2012

I am just returning from a electronic holiday during the Christmas Season. I have been celebrating Christmas from December 9 to January 9 (Epiphany ususally) since the 1980's. It is always a wonderful experience to stay with the birth of Christ celebrations past the usual brouhaha of our commercial tributes. I love all the hoopla and sort out those who are stuck in Saturnalia type celebrations from those that are blessed.

Epiphany is the old church, the Eastern Churches, the Orthodox Churches. My father's family traces its roots back to pre-Christian times and these churches sometimes show themselves more to me at Christmas and Pasha (Easter). I especially love when the Russian Orthodox Church began to publicly celebrate Christmas after the fall of communism. I have had friends int the Greek Orthodox and Serbian Orthodox and Catholic Orthodox Churches who have shared their Julian Calendar systems and rituals and customs with me. So it is with joy that I keep my tree up and my adoration of the baby Jesus scene, and even St. Nicholas but take down all my lights and wreaths that display outside to the world. My observance is personal and deepens within my home as Epiphany approaches.

This year is the year of books for me. My 2 publishes books will become ebooks and available on all readers and my new manuscript will be an ebook as well. The end of the war in Iraq is a great celebration of Epiphany as well, since the Magi probably came from the area of Iraq. I am a gentile in this world of new and old testaments and I feel the wonder of 2 celebrations, the Dec. 24-25 observance to convert the pagans in Saturnalia and changes all time for the Western world to the Roman Christian calendar and Epiphany which crosses over to the old calendar and marks the first converts probably to Christianity from the gentile world. These 3 leaders were some of the wisest men in the world at that time! They were smart enough to not return to the psychopath, King Herod's palace after visiting our Lord Jesus and his family, smart and thoughtful to give them gifts and intuitive and honest to warn them of the criminal King's evil intentions.

God selected 3 very wise men from outside the Jewish faith, who were called Magi and were kings to adore his Son. That they knelt in a cave at a manger, placed very valuable gifts before Him, and warned His family to keep safe gives us a light as to the majesty of our Father in Heaven and the amazing command of His Son on earth.

It is still a time of gift giving and receiving. The gifts might not always be in the material world or obvious. It is also a time when prayers are heard and answered quickly.

3rd Week of Advent 2011

Watching the troops return home from Iraq is the most wonderful sight this year for Advent! Only a few thousand left and then we are done. My darling has helped bring this about as peacefully as possible. Blessed are the peacekeepers!

Here at home getting ready for Christmas is a slower time this year. The excitement isn't in the decorating but that he may appear at my door any day! I do finally have my tree decorated...in the new LED lights and the windows, too. All my cards are sent or delivered. Food preparations are beginning for the Christmas feast. I have selected a dark chocolate cake this year. No Buche de Noel just a bundt cake but with colored sprinkles. It is honoring the celebration of a baby's birth long ago.

On a more somber note which is what the true Advent season is about because it is a time to think about here and a time to think about then in the Holy Land over 2,000 years ago. Tense times and poverty and overcrowdedness. Yes that is here even in Silicon Valley. The food banks are running short because the unemployment numbers of people has lasted so long the families are using the food pantries for regular meals not supplemental. Even if people are giving it is hard to keep the stocks replenished. I believe in this country everyone should have a good meal and every child should have a toy at Christmas. People around me are being nice, I am not hearing angry words anywhere.

Because of the housing crash it is next to impossible to get a home loan, like everywhere. Here there are tech sector jobs but those people who have found work can't buy a home so the rental market is overflowing and the competition has gone through the ceiling! A 1-bedroom apartment can cost $2,000 a month!

California is one of the 2 worst states for unemployment still. Even though the national figure has gone down to 8+% and Silicon Valley's tech sector has provided employment, the rest of the state is at 12+%. It is another grim Christmas here in the golden state.

My sweetheart has been sent to Afghanistan he says for a couple of weeks and should be home for Christmas. I asked him if that means our Christmas of the Western church or the Julian or Gregorian calendar of the Orthodox Churches, or is it Epiphany when he will show up at my door, like one of the Wise Men from the East? Job done in Iraq, happily. Yes welcome home brave souls of the Iraq War and Merry Christmas!

Second Week of Advent 2011

In the Second Week of Advent, 2011, wonderful events have occurred! Watched the clip on NBC the homecoming of many of our troops from Iraq, their final homecoming and reunion with their families at Ft. Hood and Ft. Bragg. It was so heartwarming causing tears of joy. All California National Guard troops are now home! Thank you God! I am hoping all troops will be evacuated before Christmas! My special peacekeeper soldier/advisor will be home too! Saying my prayers.

Environmentally, much is happening still. Whale hunting will continue, horses will be slaughtered, polar bears and other bears are struggling for their homes, - it's heartbreaking. I watched an amazing program on History Channel last week though that was somewhat encouraging on the survival rate and reclamation of the earth in the next 100 years. It was a very scientific program based on projections and theories of current environmental facts. But it was full hope of survival and actually thriving in the future because, in the end fossil fuels do run out and renewables take over. It isn't like we as the human race sat on our hands or turned away from the tragedies in nature that are unfolding. Much can be said for our advance in thinking in techonologies and willingness to change even if it is something simple like a meatless Monday or a bike ride. Of course the worst isn't over. I am not escaping into my faith as I grow sadder at the destruction but rather renewing and refreshing my soul and entire being, when I post about my religion. I believe all people must pray/meditate for their own goodness and safety. And that act of prayer actually helps me to see more hopeful signs of life for our planet and the human soul. Event though I believe that the worst is yet to come, the light is ever vigilant and shining as we make our way through our mess.

On the home front, this week I am still decorating and sending out snail mail Christmas cards as well as Christmas ecards.My cards come from Veteran's groups and are beautiful! I get address labels and stickers from them as well. DAV and the VFW both offer these products.

Last year, I invested in LED lights and gave away all my old lights. Also gave away most of the plastic greenery I had accumulated over the last 10 years since it is a green light for fresh greenery at Christmas on the environmental front. So this week, I am going to get a fresh tree and decorate it with my LED lights! Also my windows will sparkle a little brighter with those new lights. There are all kinds of new Christmas lighting coming out through fiber optics and LEDs like flameless candles and tiny ultra thin wire lights that can be threaded through decorations, exciting for designers and homemakers that delight in decorating.

Advent 2011

I love this season, Advent. It is a word that indicates anticipation, excitement of the future. This year is an extra special year for me and many others as we finish our exit from Iraq. The news today online said only 18,000 American personnel left in Iraq and most of the stuff we had there is reduced by shipping to Afghanistan, home, or selling and donating to Iraq. Oh joy! The end of a war to me is wonderfully exciting. The families waiting here at home are filled with an extra special energy waiting for their loved ones to return. Every American should be extra happy this year because of this event. We will be gone by the end of the year and maybe before, by Christmas.

I start my Christmas decorating during the first weekend of Advent. It is extra special this year because my sweetheart, an advisor in Iraq will be home for good from Iraq. He will be as safe as we are in the US, not hearing bombings daily or seeing fearful eyes in people around him. He will be surrounded by Christians and their love. And we will be united!

How wonderful that this year or rather last year I decided to always get fresh greenery and a tree. I gave away my artificial tree and wreath and swag I had for over 15 years. It is a great sign and symbol for me to have a real tree and wonderfully scented greenery throughout my home when my sweetheart will be here. I am so looking forward to this season of fresh scents, evergreen, cinnamon, cloves and ginger, nutmeg, sage, chocolate! Wonderful baked aromas from cookies and cakes. Christmas music is full of joy and hope and love and so sweet to listen to. It compels us to sing along which is good for the soul! I have been practicing my Christmas songs on the keyboard and singing along. Hope my neighbors don't mind!

Smokey, my cat, knows something is going on and it is driving him crazy. He dashes around at night and wants to go out and look at the moon for hours. But he is a wise cat and never gets into gifts or climbs the tree or knocks anything over. He is a blessing to watch as he sniffs around and then contently cuddles down in his condo to watch the proceedings. He loves the music too! He especially wants to cuddle more and sit on my lap for scratching and petting, then falls asleep on my lap.

There is so much love now and I wish everyone will enjoy this year's Advent and Christmas season with the knowledge of our brave military returning home at last from this long war. Prayers are with them and their families.

I love Thanksgiving. I love the foods that are available now and it seems some at no other time. Fresh cranberries, pomegranates, stuffing mixtures, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, sage and turkeys abounding! I grew up in an uncertain household where Thanksgiving couldn't always be counted on, not because of the expense but because of the foods. After I moved on into adulthood, my daughter as an adult exhibited similar tastes, except for pomegranates, she would rather have a steak.

I love where I live because cranberries are grown here, organic turkey farms abound, pumpkins pop up in many of the fields around San Jose before Halloween and are everywhere in the grocery stores till into December. Fresh herbs like sage are easily available if not grown in the kitchen or garden herb garden which I don't have this year, just basil. I always hated cranberries until I could make my own sauce simply with just sugar and fresh berries cooked until they popped. There was always exotic ways of fixing that dish and it was my turn to turn up my nose at the table. It says cranberry sauce not cranberry ice!!

I love sage and herb rub my turkey with butter and olive oil under the skin as it roasts. I keep the dressing of rices and veggies on the side and only put stalks of carrots and celery, an apple and onion inside the bird. I have organic sweet potatoes this year...something different and I don't know yet if I should turn them into sweet potato au gratin or sweet potato pie. I decide a couple a days before the DAY! Since moving to the west coast I have changed my salad to a fresh green salad with pomegranate seeds instead of a Waldorf salad. It was a joyful day when my daughter, Megan told me she loved that fruit. The pom trees grow in many of my neighbors yards and are a wondrous sight to behold in the autumn as the big red balls of fruit pop out and hang on the green leafed trees...foreshadowing Advent. The story of Adam and Eve in the garden has changed from an apple tree as the fruit of knowledge that tempted Eve to the beautiful pom tree which is also a fruit symbolizing fertility in the Middle East and Europe.

It is a special time, the last harvest on earth, and a time to be glad for all that we have even if it is only the birds singing in the trees.

It has been a long decade. The first wall of women casualties hit my eyes yesterday and it was the kind of experience where words aren't there...it is just a profound emotion. The Iraq war has almost wound down, the military will vacate within month and a half and all that stuff we have there, hopefully will be taken care of, either sold off or left behind. Too bad it just couldn't go to eBay except for the dangerous stuff. I think many of these soldiers coming home will become veterans. Please welcome them home!

The Monarchs

The Monarch butterflies have made it to the West Coast again and are nesting in various places like Santa Cruz and Pismo Beach. Every year they come and the cocoons are made. They go through their amazing metamorphosis and wiggle out in the spring as these beautiful creatures. Their ancestors have been doing this for a long time. It's just that this year their are fewer of them. I hope they never stop their miraculous cycle of life.

All Souls Eve and Superstition

October is a changeling month. Life slows down, temps drop to a chill in the air, leaves color up and fall to the ground, the monarch butterflies arrive to the California coast to form their winter cocoons in ancestral grounds marked by generations of migrations. And of course here we have the glorious whales and their new babies swimming south to the nurseries and warm ocean spas of the southern Pacific Ocean. This year the humpbacks have given a lively show in the Monterey Bay caught on camera and the Blue Whales in the south feeding on krill in the Channel Islands have really entertained the world with their lives. It is a joy to witness these changes.

The atmosphere though, no matter where I am, is always charged with more of a deathwatch than life giving. The edges are rougher, human transactions sometimes have less patience and there is an urge to kill along with the harvest. It is a blood time and I believe it has been on earth at this time of year since humankind has noticed. The preparation for the long bitterness of winter is fervent and the fears accompanying the knowledge of the darkness that is encroaching is tinged with the joy of the abundant harvest...the knowledge that we will make it through the winter season as far as it goes and spring will be there.

This is the time of superstition. It is conceived out of the winter fears and premonitions buried deep in the intuitive memory banks of tribes and families and passed along generations through the centuries and into millenniums. The Bible is full of references to the darkness and how it will not know the light.

For myself, the night light of the moon has always been powerful and I still stop and notice its luminance and size. It has caused my imagination and heart to stir to untold depths of romance and fears of destruction. It has conveyed curses hurled from unknown parts of the world directly at me on long moonlit nights alone or with people. And the animal abuse of superstitious births is incredible and unending no matter how enlightened we become over time. Spiders and cats and owls and bats earn strange notoriety during this cold time of change and slowness. Even in my rational mind, I avoid the nighttime and my step quickens as the daylight evaporates into the depths of terrifying shadows. It can't be helped, Halloween is coming!

Summer has officially departed time wise with the autumnal equinox, but the temperature and sunny blue skies of California don't recognize the seasonal switch. It is still in the 90's at the end of this month and I love waking up to a clear sky every morning.

Much happened this last month that I wanted to put in this blog but I decided the 350.org event, Moving Planet, was most important to promote and whatever I had to say could be said later. That Saturday I walked, but then I always walk or bike or take mass transit. It just felt better to walk that day because I knew people were consciously walking or riding their bikes all over the world to be able to breathe better longer.

International World Peace Day came and went but the USA decided to postpone a missile test that day which shows we do want peace instead of these never ending wars. I still believe we are defenders and peacekeepers, and that those in the world who want to stay free look to our big country as the shield and sword to protect any freedoms we cherish. Soon we will be officially done in Iraq. We will leave huge amounts of military stuff for the Iraqis who will buy and inherit our things we needed to war there. Thousands of US citizens will be gone leaving a fortress behind full of diplomats and personnel and maybe we will have some troops stationed in friendly Kuwait. But it will be over, at last. Home of Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham and his tribe, and Nana, the Whore of Babylon, we have helped restore the Garden of Eden wetlands and put back some treasures in the Iraq museum. But I doubt if I will ever see the Tiger and Euphrates Rivers that were the Cradle of Civilization, the beginnings of modern humankind. I will always be fascinated by the history of that area such as the Library of Nineveh, but forbidden like the first inhabitants, Adam and his Eve of ever seeing this lost Garden.

So many things have been happening but for me the most important that have stayed at the top of my list have been the announcement of the world population increasing to 7 billion people next month and the arrival of pods of blue whales to the California coast this month to feast on krill.

More on the population next month but the blue whale, oh I wish I could see them. These magnificent animals are the largest of our kind, mammals, on earth and were once nearly extinct. But thanks to environmentalists, concerned people and legislators, they have been saved! They arrived around the Channel Islands National Marine Life Sanctuary a few weeks ago and may even come up to the Monterey Bay NMLS as the water temperatures change and the krill moves on. I have always wanted to see one and now more than ever. I found out a distant relative, Sir Robert Sibbald, a physician in Scotland during the late 1600's was also a naturalist and illustrator who recorded all the flora and fauna he could find in Scotland. He named the blue whale, Sibbaldus, which is not commonly used today but still listed. The genetic codes and DNA of Sir Robert has obviously been a profound influence in my career direction!

I hope the seasonal changes are pleasant as we slip towards winter darkness. I have learned to take krill oil from my brothers and sisters, the blue whales which should help me through this year's winter of climate change, along with a flu shot. Still as I am looking out at sunny skies and temps in the 90's, it's hard to think about stormy skies with cold rains and always the darkness.

California Coastal Walk

We live in one of the most scenic states in the Union. For some people it is the mountains, even the deserts, and of course the beautiful forests, especially the majestic and loving Redwoods. Ever since I could remember I longed to live here because of the coast and the Pacific Ocean. It is where I thought the sand on the beaches shone with diamonds and was very slick with smiling starfish. Then as I grew up I wanted to live right on the beach and watch and listen to the waves and explore the seemingless endless coast. Mentally I escaped from where ever I was living to the beautiful California Coast and I would be refreshed. It has never disappointed me, not from the first time I saw it in person when I was 16. My father wanted us to live here so he could be part of the music scene in Hollywood and be with his friends. That was stopped abruptly with his untimely death. Getting here was a struggle and it turns out it had to be providential. The coast needed me as well!

That was the work on the federally protected National Marine Life Sanctuaries. Above are a few of the watercolors from my shop, Starbell Enterprises, that feature the Sanctuaries on gift items. It has been a labor of love and often sheer pleasure to find places along the coast I wanted to paint to include in my shop.

I hope before winter sets in, you will be able to get out to the coast and walk along the many trails and enjoy the breathtaking views, maybe see a whale or otter depending on where you are! The ions in the sea air are good for you and you can brush most of the cobwebs from your mind, coming away refreshed.

Summer Solstice 2011

Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year. It is always on June 21 and this year occurs precisely at 1:16 pm EDT. It comes just before my birthday and for me is a great gift from nature for the celebration!

The reason is I have SAD, seasonal affective disorder, and the more sunlight the better. Sunlight is the greatest cure for SAD. Some lights actually hurt me, certain moonlight, the orange streetlights in San Jose that were put there by the astronomers at Lick Observatory to cut the lights of the city so they could observe the night sky better, and almost all florescent lighting except cfl's. I actually get nauseated by these lights or uneasy. So this wonderful natural event is heralded in my life for enjoyment of natural sunlight as long as I can.

The second part of nature's gift around my birthday is what one naturalist in Boston, MA once wrote in the Boston Globe for the very day of my birthday, the 24th. It is the day of the year that the timothy is high and all birds roost. Every bird has a home, so should every human.

I often feel left out on Father's Day because I grew up without my dad most of my life. He was killed in a car wreck when I was 1 year old. He was moving us to the desert where he could breathe and where he would be close to his friends in Hollywood so he could get involved in the music of the movies. I was raised on who he was and what he stood for in his life. People didn't know how hungry I was for anything they had to say about him and what a surprise...it was all so stunningly wonderful that my heart would break even more missing his presence in my life. But he was so important to me that he influenced how I lived and always for the best.

I read an online article about 5 things a good dad does. So I decided to list the things he lived his life by that influenced me and made me proud to be his daughter. Here they are:

1. Belief in God, a practicing Christian.
2. Love of family and children, sometimes duty bound over love. He dedicated his music to love songs to fall in love to and marry around. The night he was killed, his friends begged him to stay over and rest and start in the morning. Something made him leave in the middle of the night, tired. Probably my mother talked to him on the phone and told him to come home. I do blame her. He was so warm and affectionate everyone said. She is the opposite, cold and distant.
3. Service to his country. Raised by a WWI Army vet, his dad, he was eager to serve in WWII wanting to be in the Army Air Corps. His asthma kept him out until Pearl Harbor then he was drafted into the Navy. He had learned to fly anyway on his own which really impressed me. At Treasure Island in SF, CA he had a near fatal asthma attack and was honorably discharged, his unit was heading to Iwo Jima.
4. Discipline and Education. He loved music and played most instruments specializing in tenor sax and sang tenor. He had a very popular big band in the 40's which played at a nightclub, The Frog Hop in St. Joseph, MO. All the big band names came through town and he was able to sit in with each one. He went to NYC and auditioned with Tommy Dorsey's Band and played awhile but didn't like the all night drinking. He turned down heroin and homosexuality as he was approached with each element. Lots of musicians go the drug and alcohol route but my dad was able to stay clean and quit any drinking before I was born.
He had his college degree and taught music in high school. He loved kids and wanted everyone to at least experience music and enjoy it. He had a great sense of humor and entertained people. At the club on Friday nights he was live with his band and played the top 40 in the 40's, broadcasting on a local radio show. He announced my brother's birth on the air!
5. Career. Discipline and education are intertwined with this one but he was dedicated to his work and since he decided New York wasn't his scene, he was ready for his friends in Hollywood and to contribute to the music scene in the movies. Always of course, he would have a band. He was moving us to the Arizona desert so he could breathe the air better and be close to LA when he was killed in a car wreck coming home to Colorado with a trailer for our stuff.

His short life was jam packed with treasures and gifts and wonderful people who always enjoyed his music and humor. I missed him all my life but belief in God and being Christian has helped sustain me and I really couldn't have asked for a better dad. Thank you, Daddy!

Today is Flag Day and I always have a flag showing in my home. I also I have a special flag I ordered years ago from my Congressman. It flew over the Capitol for the day that my father passed away. Then it was sent to me. It is kept in a special case and brought out once in awhile on special occasions. What a difference it makes to me! You can ask your Senator or Representative to do this for you and then you have a special keepsake for the rest of your life.

It is the time of Pentacost which finalizes on June 12, 2011 this year. Pentacost marks the beginning of the Christian church for the rest of the world, Jews and Gentiles. It is the time to receive spiritual gifts from God and to recognize gifts given to others. I know I have gifts but I know also that I don't have certain gifts like healing.

I do have the gift of observation and this spring is a big lesson in observing what is happening on earth. The cataclysmic forces that cause earthquakes to be felt around the world and continents to move, meltdowns in nuclear reactors thought to be "safe", floods and rains of Biblical proportions, whirlwinds of the magnitude to think of the sufferings of Job who loses everything dear, fires that destroy whole forests, seemingly endless wars, terror, and suffering, and economic devastation all have come to us on earth in just the last few years, really since the beginning of the millineum. Each year brings some new frightening news until we wonder what is next...something even darker from space? It is a time to reflect, pray and ask for forgiveness from God and to forgive others as well. It is a time when no one is safe and we must look at prophecy to try to understand and to learn what we are doing to Creation and try to stop the endless catastrophes that strike all over our planet, the Earth, our home. Some of us believe that it is the end of times and that nothing will change until our Savior, Lord Jesus returns to earth at Armegeddon.

I hope peace will return to our planet and love will prevail.

I saw this film on The Jesus Prayer this last weekend. Many monastaries in the deserts in Egypt, Israel, and in Romania and Russia were filmed inside with interviews with the monks. The viewers could see the lifestyle of the monks in St. Anthony's, St. Catherine's and others. What it means to have a prayerful life to the person praying and to their fellow monks, to the world was examined. It was like a breath of fresh spring air in the middle of our contemporary hub-bub of endless pressure and anxiety. The emphasis was on the Jesus Prayer and its power. It is very simple to pray but must be prayed as it is. You pray this simple prayer to our Lord Jesus and an immediate sense of peace and calm should come over you. Remember it is an ancient prayer that has been prayed over and over again for hundreds and hundreds of years. Any prayer using the name of our Lord is sacred but this is a special prayer handed down through the ages from hermits, monks and nuns.

Greenpeace has 130 candlelight vigils, at least, planned for this evening for Japan and the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear victims. I say nuclear because even though no one has died yet from their reactor meltdowns, they are in a watch and protect mode that must be terrifying. It is our great lesson of things that could come. In my state, Diablo nuclear reactor is by the ocean and by the San Andreas fault. This earthquake in Japan was felt clear around the world. The leakage is so volatile and difficult to stop, there is a new report every few hours.

Japan and the Pacific Ocean coasts...

It was like the wind being knocked out of me as I watched the news on tv of the earthquake in Japan, the movement of the tsunami and formation of whirlpools in the Pacific Ocean. Then the news switched to Santa Cruz, CA right over the mountains from my home. I watched boats floating capsized or lopsided down the waterways of the marina, dislodged from their moorings but on a smooth water surface. Then the boats began to hit other boats floating and then boats that were still moored to the docks. Docks began to break up and I kept listening to the newscasters for the reason. There were no waves and the surface never broke.

Then a scientist came on telling about the swift undercurrents that were beginning to hit our coast. The underwater waves were traveling 500 mph from the Japanese coast of origin across the Pacific washing over islands and Hawaii beaches, losing some strength in the distance until they reached North and South America, particularly the California coast. Santa Cruz was one of the hardest hit. The Internet carried the news that $15 m worth of damage was done to the marina.

Some days I think this world has grown so small with our fast travel and speedy communications, satellites transmitting compressed space to our small computer windows on the world. But seeing the NOAA animated version of what was transpiring in the Pacific...seeing the entire Pacific Ocean swirling and chaotic made me realize how terribly small humans truly are and at the mercy of the natural forces on this planet, forces we have tampered with to near the point of no return. God's Word in the last chapter of his great book, The Bible, has all this information available to us...and it was written 2,000 years ago! I'm glad I didn't miss that, I feel somewhat prepared for these catastrophic events. It definitely is the time of prayers. It is a holy season of Lent now and this is what He wants us to do. Come to Him humbly and pray for His help and guidance. He helps me and I hope He will help this world.

Is Presidents Day First Ladies Day, too?

This is Presidents Day holiday weekend. It is the day we celebrate Washington and Lincoln's birthdays together instead of alternating the birthdays every year, one year Washington, one year Lincoln. And in this way we can look at all the Presidents and ponder which ones we like and which ones we don't. It is also a time to look at the office of the President and be thankful that George Washington decided on 8 years only for the length of the Presidency of each person who attained the office. Only one man broke that honored tradition which was FDR but I guess the times were beyond tradition. I don't know I wasn't born yet. He is definitely one of the Presidents I heard controversial and disparaging remarks about growing up. JFK, LBJ, Nixon were others that were very disparaged around me. Funny how time has made a nice patina on the images of these men and I have lived through the times long enough to put those people in categories, yes label them because the politics became so clear as time went on. Peer groups are like that and I have been very flexible and able to leave groups who really try to join me. Leave them as their politics go beyond the level of discussion and sink into the darkness on baseless fears and foolishness and lack of compassion for their fellow humans. I also have learned to say sympathizers and wisdom more often. Wisdom often transcends the times we are in.

The draft during the Viet Nam War era and the poor economy that a long drawn-out war created made JFK, LBJ and Nixon unpopular presidents. But the Civl Rights Act was born and brought into being by JFK and LBJ. Nixon never liked the Viet Nam war but managed to finally end it disappointedly years too late for many young Americans my age who perished who returned home addicted to contraband from marijauna to heroine. LBJ's First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson reawoke the environmental movement in the US with her beautify America work and if you are interested in her work google her because it is worth it. Of course, we thank Richard Nixon for the EPA, the Endangered Species Act (he loved wolves and was deeply concerned for the eagles which we almost extinguished), the Clean Water Act, and the Clean Air Act. Finally the draft was eliminated and our wars in the middle east have been fought without it.

My favorite Presidents though are John Adams and his First Lady Abigail Adams who both were far thinking people who loved one another sincerely and cared so deeply for this country in is astounding their sacrifices. He asked George Washington to run for President because he had won the war, fought the battles, led the troops, could rally the people, even though he was a slave owner, something Adams and his wife were terribly opposed to. Adams knew he could never have framed the constitution and won our country without Washington. But it is John Adams who intricately fought a dedicated battle for truth and freedom from tyranny with his words and lawyer's wisdom and prayers. But Abigail knew we had incurred the disfavor with God by allowing slavery into our new country. Also she wanted women to be educated, she could read and write because her father was a minister and taught her. John Adams, a man ahead of his time wanted something for the people in the way of medical coverage and more research and care for mental illness, having watched a dear friend fall into an abyss and put into Bedlam during the Revolutionary War. He instinctively knew there could be more care and knowledge available here. God bless you President Adams for your forethought, this 21st c. we have reached parity in insurance and recognized mental illness (brain disease) as a medical condition, improved conditions for treatment and continue research for medicine and treatments that can put the disease in remission or at least keep the symptoms in control.

My second favorite president is Abraham Lincoln but everyone reads and knows about him and his tenure in the White House. I love his language and thought behind his speeches. Another lawyer who dedicated his knowledge and abilities to freedom from tyranny and inspiration for the people of the USA.

My third favorite president is Theodore Roosevelt, and that is because of his love of this land. Lincoln recognized the environmental movement that had been born in California with the redwood forests and John Muirs love of Yosemite and the Sierra Mountain Range. I first ran into T. Roosevelt when I spent part of a summer studying geology in the Black Hills, South Dakota. In the descent into the Jewel Cave I realized this President had been there and was awestruck as I was by the beauty of this cave and others and the treasures of the Black Hills. It wasn't just a place where there was gold. He loved the National Parks system. He also wanted some kind of federal health plan to help people.

Maybe I admire these men because these presidents helped shape this country, protected it internally, cleaned it up, or guided it when the world was crashing headlong into a cataclysmic energy that we are trying to brake or rein in perhaps futilely to this day. These men would want us to do whatever we could to stop our pollution and contributions to climate change.

But they also all served before there were such things as world wars, thermonuclear bombs and other means of wiping out civilizations, communism, empty commercialism, and global warming. They still had an innocence about them, an idealism and love of the world. I hope so anyway. Today I heard in a sermon that the term "New World Order" was coined in the late 1700's.

Whoever you admire or dispise, I hope this government is worth thinking about and observing a holiday to honor its leaders.

The most barbaric have been caught and stopped in the massacre at Tuscon, AZ. Today is the funeral of the little 9 year old who was murdered because she was following her need to know more about our country. She was a wonderful, active little girl, maybe a genius. A child. She was born on 9-11-2001. The bully monster that killed her, women and unarmed men, is imprisoned, people speculating on his mental stability. I believe he was incredibly strong and stable that day to pull off what he did...as a demon! Yes, we can demonize. Ted Bundy, the terrifying serial murderer of young women, showed how during his trial, the judge even declared he had demonized in front of them. It is the opposite of an angel. Maybe Christina Green was an angel on earth meeting a demon in the Biblical spiritual world. She is with God now and we as a civilized country bury our dead and need to mourn.

It just didn't stop and that horrible Baptist, I can't believe they are in that denominiation, Church was coming to harrass the mourners, to interupt the funeral ceremony. Are they another band of demons? How barbaric is that!!?? The Govenor of Arizona and the legislators had a shining moment when they outlawed the group from doing their damage. The world was watching...so glad the power of the American government stepped in.

One of the great artists of the 20th century, Nathan Oliviera passed away and his memoiral is today at Stanford University where he was a long-time teacher, mentor, professor, inspiration. When I started seriously painting in 1965, he was one of the American artists that influenced me. He was unique but also part of the West Coast/Bay Area School of artists. I only knew his work but when I moved here I became aware of the school and who was in it and their work. It was incredible to me, how much my work of the 60's fit into that group. Of course, I was still a student but I confounded many of my professors. They only knew to let me paint, that I had my own direction and was a colorist. Sometimes though they didn't get it. When I moved to the West Coast and continued my education the art professors were even more enlightened and I was very comfortable in my work. But they always said, you need to move to California or Mexico because of your colors. When I started my business, Starbell Enterprises, with 4 handpainted greeting cards in watercolors of the Monterey Bay National Marine Life Sanctuary, I was told people liked my colors locally because they were "California colors". I felt right at home and my business has only grown!

Oliviera was an inspiration from the first painting I ever saw of his. I went to his show of new work at the San Jose Museum of Art a few years ago and the inpiration was still working...although the timbre of his work had shifted somewhat. I love his poetic and haunting side, his out of the mists, the blue, the hiddeness revealed but you have to think about what it was about...it is stimulating. That's it, I carry his images with me mentally, one of the few artists of all time that stays with me...such a profound man he was. And really typically an artist simply observing life around him...his own life deeply grounded in family, education, career, friends...truly an amazing person, a genuine artist! His passing is noted, his influence will stay, his spiritual life will continue! Peace and bless you, sir!
